Research Positions - Institute of Fundamental Studies - Kandy

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and highly motivated persons to undertake basic (fundamental) research in the following areas on a project basis.

1. Cell Biology
2. Toxicology

Each successful applicant will be appointed to a suitable post commensurate with the research record and within the salary ranges attached to the respective positions listed below.

Senior Research Fellow 57,575 - 4x1,180 - 61,895 + 25%
Research Fellow 50,825 - 4x945 - 54,605 + 25%

The suitability will depend on qualifications and merit as evaluated in terms of the recruitments and promotion scheme for research staff of the institute revised to the extent of deletion of the words “And Promotion” and consequently changes as determined by the Board of Governors. The unrevised version is available at www.ifs.ac.lk or a copy of it can be obtained from the Institute by sending a stamped self-addresses envelope.

The position is on a contract basis expiring at the end of five years. Any renewable of a contract at the expiry of five-years will be, solely at the direction of the Institute, on a performance based evaluation. There will no change of remuneration or position without being subject to the above stipulation. Successful applicants are expected to contribute actively towards the achievement of the aims and objects of the Institute. In particular, research and original investigation into fundamental studies in science and technology taken in the broadest sense by the institute will be expected to portray a reasonable balance between curiosity driven research and what has been defined, for example, by the Association of American Universities, as applicable to the understanding of local problems.

The remunerations are presently tax free to the extent stipulated under the Law. Successful applicants will contribute 10% of their remuneration to the E.P.F., while the institute’s contribution will be 12% to E.P.F & 3% to E.T.F.

Qualifications:
1. A first degree preferably with a first class or an upper second class, and
2. A relevant postgraduate degree (preferably a PhD) from a recognized university, and
3. A proven track record of continued research and/ or contributions to development

Note: Applicants for the Toxicology project should have a good background in aquatic toxicology, immunology, antibody-based analytical methods, molecular biology and biomedicine.

Age limit:
There is no age limit, but the applicant should provide concrete evidence of continuing high caliber research and that he/she is physically and mentally fit.

Interpersonal relations:
Each successful applicant is expected to set up his/ her own research team with the staff available, work together with other non-academic staff of the Institute and contribute actively to the Research council of the institute.
